Hemp and Marijuana – What is the difference?
Hemp is NOT marijuana and contains no drug value. Although Hemp is a plant-based super-food and is one of the most nutritious plants in the world.
Hemp Oil is NOT marijuana – but a plant-based super-food
To start with both hemp and marijuana are different species of the plant cannabis sativa. This plant species includes a large variety of plants with different characteristics.
Essentially they are weeds that will grow in a wide variety of climates, soil types and conditions.
Hemp and Marijuana are also cultivated differently from each other and are scientifically different.
The word “Hemp” commonly referred to as the industrial/commercial use of the cannabis stalk and seeds.
Its seeds are chiefly used to make hemp seed oil, body care products (that can be use on the hair and the skin), and the stalk for textile, building materials and paper etc.
The term “Marijuana” refers to medicinal, recreational use involving the smoking of the cannabis flowers.
Both species have the chemical THC, (tetrahydrocannabinol) content.
Hemp has a much lower THC content being around 0.01-0.03% compared to around 10-15% for Marijuana.
It takes at least 3% THC to get high when used for drug consumption.
This makes getting high on hemp virtually impossible. The reason for the low THC content in hemp is that most THC is formed in resin glands on the buds and flowers of the cannabis plant.
Industrial hemp is not cultivated to produces buds and therefore lacks the primary component that gives the marijuana high.
The species of plant grown for hemp are used for their high fiber content and are unsuitable for recreational use.
The species grown for marijuana has poor fiber quality but higher levels of THC enough to cause psychological and physical effects.
Hemp is considered the most versatile plant known to man
The seed and seed-oil are high in protein, essential fatty and amino acids and vitamins
Hemp is a highly versatile easily grown plant that conditions the soil as it grows. It needs no chemicals, pesticides or herbicides.
The seed and seed-oil are high in protein, essential fatty and amino acids and vitamins. It is also used to make clothes, paper, textiles, and more.
It is hardy rapidly growing crop which produces double the amount of fiber as trees or cotton, although it is illegal to grow hemp in some countries.
Hemp and Marijuana – What is the difference?
Hemp plants are grown very close together and they grow straight up till they are around 10ft upwards, not outwards, this growing focus is not on producing buds but on producing the length of the stalk.
They have a woody core and are stiff and hard to walk through, very similar to a crop of bamboo.
Marijuana on the other hand needs to be grown in generally warm and humid environments in order to produce the desired quantity and quality of THC- containing buds.
Marijuana plants need to be grown with lots of room to bush out having lots of low branches leaves and soft flexible stems.
Cross breeding the hemp and marijuana plant is not an option, this process will leave both plants infertile.
When they cross pollinate you lose the buds of the flowers and the seeds.
With hemp these parts are essential for a wide range of uses like hemp oil for hair and over 25000 uses.
The conclusions to this article are it must be said that hemp and marijuana are of the same species but the difference is also how it is grown and cultivated and what it is used for.
